I, too, much prefer FireWire. It's built for drives. I guess eSATA is a reasonable replacement as well (but the 'e' in eSATA is more like a bolt-on to the standard, which was meant to be internal). USB suffers from requiring more CPU usage and the idea of running a high speed device like a drive on the same bus as my mouse just seems icky... You can find cheap FireWire cables at Altex and expensive ones at BestBuy. I, too, much prefer FireWire. It’s built for drives. Though firewire is a better technology then USB, I guess USB has saturated everything.
