The Jorbs

A few months ago, I moved to a new team at work. I have no idea if I’m violating any insider trading rules by talking about it in detail, so I won’t. =) That said, I’m having a lot of fun on it now and I’m writing a whole heck of a lot of JavaScript which I’ve grown fond of. JS used to have kind of a “kiddie” language stigma to it back in the day, but I’ve learned it’s actually quite powerful and works pretty well for a lot of asynchronous tasks (which, in the world of the web, happen all the time). I’m itching to get some more open source projects (small ones, even) on my github account. Hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to soon.

I’ve got a few photos stuck in the camera that I haven’t processed yet from these past few weekends. I’ll get to them eventually.

Tomorrow night, Chad, Sam, Beika and I are going to see BATTLESHIP at midnight because it’s AWESOME. Honestly, I’m pretty sure it’s quite terrible, but I’m hoping in an awesome way. If someone yells “YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!” I’ll call the whole adventure a success. I’ll give you all an update on how this goes. Stay tuned.

What's in a name?

Okay, I’m seriously considering changing my middle name for reasons I won’t dive into right now, but maybe you can ask me in person if you’re really curious. The real point of this post is that I’m not entirely sure what I want to change it to. Currently, I have two comical front-runners and no other solid ideas.

  1. Danger

  2. Tyrone/Tirone

I don’t think I could actually commit to going with Tyrone, but Danger is sounding fairly appealing to me at the moment. I’m looking for something clever/fun so if you have ideas, share!

Oh! I should mention… this is NOT and April 1st joke. =P

In other news, I found a wonderful program to make fake Magic cards and had a blast of a time creating Sam and Viraj cards. I’m sure Gene, Liang, Mark, and Sam can attest to the many giggles that came from my desk as I tinkered with this. I was so pleased with myself. Here are draft versions of two Virajs. You’ll have to wait for the Sam one. I think I’m going to redo what I’ve got.

=D

Vacation!

I’m in Hawaii! Today, I plan on not doing much at all. =)

I’ll post pics and videos later (though you can probably find a decent amount of pics on Facebook/Flickr). For now, I will leave you this:

:D

Also, Oriana told me a while ago she threw away the copy of Twilight I got her from London (so what if it was infected with glitter?!). I am very disappointed, so I think I will be giving her some more copies from airports around the world…

For Oriana

Facebook Timeline

So I enabled Timeline on my account since I’m one of those developer types and it’s actually pretty cool.

The timeline gets more general the further back you go (and probably because I used FB less when I first started), but here are some things it thought to highlight back in the day:

shrug =)

Making the MakerBot

Last week, Andrew cryptically scheduled Ryan for a day of something. No one really knew what Andrew was up to, so we weren’t sure whether Ryan would be alive after that day. Turns out, Andrew bought the parts to assemble a MakerBot, so Mark, Andrew and Ryan set out to make the MakerBot so they could make other stuff. Oh… Sam joined for a brief period of time.

They finished really early this morning, but I took a few photos last night. I played around with the processing a bit… hope it’s not annoying. ;)

Uchiko

I took my mom to Uchiko and got their 10 course meal thingy. It was quite tasty!

I also decided to get a new receiver because my Onkyo was kind of crapping out and having issues with certain inputs. Decided to get a Pioneer VSX-1020-K, which I just got today and installed. I’m now letting Star Trek play to “break it in” (I don’t think I need to do that). While installing the receiver, I discovered that some punk had unplugged my subwoofer and who knows how long that’s been that way. Hmph.

In other food related news, I booked a reservation at Alinea!

Oh, also, here are a lot of Olivers from the past year or so of blog posts (click for larger version).

Teetar Sauce Launched

I finally launched TeetarSauce.com, the site dedicated to Viraj Bhagat! I’ve owned the domain name for a while with changing intentions, but finally decided to put something together and get it live this weekend.

Teetar Sauce - Viraj Bhagat

My sleep schedule has been kind of messed up this past week initially due to jet-lag, but I didn’t do a whole lot to fix it. I’ve been falling asleep at around 5PM with the intention of waking up in an hour or two, but I keep on sleeping through my alarms and waking up in the 3AM-5AM range. However, with some help of some HoN play time, I managed to stay up until midnight last night so hopefully my schedule will have righted itself for this coming week.

It’s also my mom’s birthday today. Happy birthday, mother!

I'm back!

Yes, I’m back in the US now. I’ll post more later but I just wanted to say happy 2011!

Here’s a wordle image of Owiber.com blog posts for 2010.

Am I going to get in trouble because “Sam” is mentioned more times than “Melissa?” Uh ohhhhhh…

You can see last year’s for reference.

HoN HoN HoN

There was lots of HoN last week. Somehow, Viraj has become really really horrible at the game. We end up balancing teams counting him as a negative because he usually ends up hurting his team more than he helps. That makes balancing a little tricky because on the rare occasion that he doesn’t do horribly but instead just does mediocre, his team ends up winning because we’ve tried to balance out his horribleness.

On Sunday, my mom locked my car keys in my car, so I slept while she obtained my spare key. Wooooooo.

I’ve been watching Veronica Mars and I just finished the first season. Man, that would have been a frustrating season finale and they even tease you throughout the first episode of the second season before resolving the cliff-hangers. Glad I don’t have to wait. =) Enjoyable show.

Green Destiny

I was talking to Melissa about when I read the Lord of the Rings series which was back at UT when I took Linguistics of Tolkien’s Middle Earth with Mark. That brought up the subject of our awesome project where Mark and I took a MrTechHappy plot and translated it into Quenya, Tolkien’s elvish language. The translated comic is available here, but I would recommend just reading the English version then looking at our translation PDF which is pretty awesome. I like how we translated my name to mean “SnowFlower.”

There are quite a few good translations, I thought, but here are two humorous ones as a preview:

Haha…
